You Can Buy an Election in America!

AMERICANS DO NOT LIKE BULLIES…..We never have and probably never will. It is against our nature as rebels, protestors, and free thinkers. This applies whether we are Democrats, Republicans, Independents or none of the above. We don’t like the notion that someone, ANYONE can buy our favor. We are a just, moral, and good people. If a king or dictator was to come before us and say “What’s so important about your democracy, I’ll make you rich, as long as you agree to bow down to me,”…… would we take the offer? I think not. Certain Americans most certainly can, and have been bought, but by in large as a people, it ain’t happening. You can take your offer and shove it up your ass Mr. King. “Nuts.”  That’s just how we roll in the United States. We are NOT FOR SALE to the highest bidder. To those who believe it’s okay for someone to buy an election, simply because they control the media, the airwaves, or the press, and can afford to put their picture and spin on every billboard and magazine in the country, does NOT entitle them to the job. Just because a person can afford to demonize another candidate with the most rhetoric and vitriol and outright lies, doesn’t give that person the right to hold public office. Jefferson once wrote: “THE END OF DEMOCRACY  and the revolution will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed corporations.”

Today corporations have the ability to spend unlimited funds to elect the person of their choosing. It’s only been this way since 2010 when the Supreme Court ruled in the Citizens United Case to allow unrestricted donations by corporations towards a candidate of their choice. The new law also doesn’t require the donor to even reveal himself in most cases. It wasn’t a unanimous decision; in fact it was 5-4 and overturned a precedent set many several years earlier. Does anyone with an ounce of integrity believe that this was the intent of our founding fathers? Does anyone with an ounce of integrity believe this is the way America should allow its elections to be run? Individuals are restricted by the amount of donations they can make, but a closely held corporation (owned by one shareholder) can make unlimited campaign contributions.

Is this what we want? I don’t care if you’re liberal, conservative or think Barack Obama is a Muslim Mahdi or Mitt Romney a Prophet of God following the footsteps of Joseph Smith, this kind of manipulation is wrong. This is why campaign contributions by individuals are limited, so this type of thing wouldn’t happen. That the Supreme Course even considered the case of Citizens United is a testament to how fucked-up our judiciary has become. When an outfit like “A.L.E.C.” (American Legislative Executive Council) partners with a couple of brothers who own casinos and a right wing henchman like Carl Rove to mount a “Billion Dollar Campaign” funded by un-named corporate interests against Barack Obama, it is tantamount to buying an election.

We’ve fought a lot of battles in this country to get where we are. A lot of soldiers and citizens have sacrificed everything in the name of freedom and democracy. We’re a society where we freely elect our rulers, without fear of reprisals or of having to owe anyone anything as a result of our vote. Now we face a day when a very select few have been given the power to BUY our destiny. Speak up; question your leaders, your friends and family. As Americans we don’t goose step for anyone. We’re rebels and follow our own instincts and not the prodding of some assholes who think they’re above us, who think we’ll do whatever they dictate. Put your partisan political views behind you and reject this affront to our freedom.
